Day 22: Ouray, Colorado

The weather gods were kind today. Despite heavy rain and potential flash floods being forecast we just had some occasional drizzle and patchy clouds to contend with. That was pretty cool as we rode a series of high mountain passes from Gunnison to Ouray. Slumgullion, Engineers, California at 13 000 feet and then the aptly named Corkscrew that descends in a series of tights hairpin bends forever. We had ridden most of this last year when we were here although not always in the same direction. It all seemed easier now reflecting another years experience and in the end we finished quite early having had yet another day of awesome scenery and fun technical riding. I was happy to chill out and read my book but Dave went out again and by the sounds of it had an interesting mini adventure. One picture he has taken shows the orange imprint of his crash bars on a rock suggesting he had a good time! He has a sore knee and a series of other intriguing photos as well.
The mountains here change so quickly in their nature. From almost desert red rock near Gunnison to conifer covered slopes near Lake City to the most astonishing reds, oranges and yellow scree slopes over California to huge vertical cliffs of black and grey rock here in Ouray. All of it beautiful and spectacular.
Once again I was impressed at how many locals enjoy the back country with no shortage of jeeps, ATV's and for the the first time a trickle of other motorbikes. Everybody behaves very well with any 4 wheelers very quick to pull over to let one past.
Once again I has hoped to put some pictures from Daves Go-pro camera on the blog but despite my shameless attempts to keep him awake he is again asleep! This is so he can be fully rested when he wakes up in a couple of hours time to annoy me in the early hours.
I would love to tell you all something interesting or humorous but nothing comes to mind. I should have some good photos tomorrow. Talk then.
